"UltraLords not afraid of chickens!"..... but I am!

so on Monday morning i had this great idea to go up to aunt Evi's farm (Shawn's moms sister) and well, collect some chicken eggs and see the horses and pick some of her beautiful cabbage she has been growing because William has never had cabbage before and was very curious about it. i thought it would be a good experience! so we got up early and headed out up the hill to Evi's.

first stop the chicken coop:

now i have never dealt with chickens before, and told Evi this over the phone before heading over. but she reassured me they weren't gonna attack me or the kids, she did say they might peck a bit to protect their eggs (what mom wouldn't?) but usually will just get up and leave the nest.

so feeling confident that i could handle these chickens, bravely lead the way into the coop. now since it was still early in the day only one chicken had laid.... a big, fat, intimidating red momma chicken who despite my best efforts would not leave her nest. ("gulp") not wanting to disappoint my kids with no eggs, i got my game face on and bravely reached my hand into her nest....

she pecked my arm! freaking out i jumped back like i had just been brutally attacked not mildly pecked, which made William ask if there was a spider because it was about the same reaction i have to those..lol!

after reassuring the kids (and myself) that i could do this. i calmed my nerves and reached my hand in again with the determination to get an egg. peck peck peck! but i got one! yea for me! and William, who was smiling from ear to ear took the egg and excitedly showed it to Ivy like it was a precious treasure!

seeing this reaction gave me enough motivation to get one more egg so ivy could have one too! so a few pecks and mild screams later, i get the second egg! by this point, momma chicken was mad at me and my fumbling inexperience, and was clucking at the top of her lungs, so we thanked her and quickly exited the coop... before the images of angry chickens flying for my head were ever realized!

moral of the story: chickens are scary! at least to me.
and next time Shawn can collect the eggs!

Alina that is so funny! I'm sure I would have reacted the same way! When Jordan and I were first married we went to this country fair where among other things, they were selling chickens and they seemed so cute that I asked Jordan if we could get one. Sweet new husband that he was he said yes, but as we walked up to the cages I said "I'm too scared!" So we got some kettle corn instead:)
